William Erskine Cleland, 87, of Capron, died Friday, May 11, 2012 in his home after a long illness. Born October 31, 1924 in Cambridge, OH, son of Alfred Erskine and Janet (Robertson) Cleland. William’s family moved to IL in November of 1951. Attended Blackburn College before serving in the US Navy during WWII. Married Helen Louise Davis on July 11, 1953 in Polo, IL. Member of the Capron United Methodist Church, was a farmer for many years, North Boone School Board member, Bonus Boosters 4-H leader, served on the board for People’s Credit Union, on the board and past president of the Boone County Farm Bureau, and member of the Livestock Feeders Association.
Survivors include loving wife Louise, sons Jerry (Janell) of Highwood, John (Diane) of Capron, Bruce of Tucson, AZ, Michael (Vicki) of Roscoe, Steve of Rockford, daughter Barbara (Chuck) Massier of Sycamore, grandchildren Justin (Erika), Scott, Daria, Taylor, Jared, Mikaela, Alicia, Erika, Danielle, Damon, and Derek, sister Betty Belle (Len) Cherry, and sister-in-law Jeanne Cleland. Predeceased by parents and brother Alfred, Jr.

Funeral Information

Memorial service 11 AM, Saturday, June 9, 2012 in Capron United Methodist Church with Rev. Erick McKnight officiating. Cremation rites have been accorded. Visitation 9:30 AM until time of service in the church.

Donations Information

In lieu of flowers donations may be given to the family for a memorial to be established.
