Irene L. Parks, 93, of Belvidere, died Friday, January 13, 2012 in Maple Crest Care Center following a long illness. Irene was born on April 30, 1918 in Mishawaka, Indiana; the daughter of George and Veronica (Gase) Tavernier. She was married to Joseph Sailor in 1936, he preceded her in death. She married John A. Parks in Belvidere on July 20, 1968. Irene has been a resident of Belvidere since 1965, coming here from South Bend, Indiana. She was employed as a Seamstress for U.S. Rubber Company and Studebaker Co. both in South Bend; and later for Sanitary Scale Co. in Belvidere. Irene was a member of St. James Catholic Church, and Women of the Moose, Belvidere Lodge #1052, Life member of V.F.W. John Hugo Kaiser Post #1461 and American Legion Boone Post #77 Women’s auxiliaries. Irene earned her pilot’s license when in her 50’s. She and John owned and rode horses. Irene and John belonged to a very active fishing and camping club and also a swinging square dance club. She is known to have correctly completed every crossword puzzle she ever laid hands on. The Great Depression prevented her from earning her high school diploma, so in her late 40’s, Irene earned her GED in the top 5% of her class. Irene is survived by three daughters, Claudia J. Sailor Nimocks, Hope Mills, NC; Dorothy J. Elkins, Mishawaka, IN; Janet S. Sailor, Angel Fire, NM; six grandchildren, Karim Joseph (Carol) Murray, Larbi John (Tina) Murray, Laura (Steven) Eisenbarth, Tara Troyer, Tod D. Sailor, Thad S. Troyer; many great grandchildren; brother, Robert Louis Tavernier, Sr. two sisters, Billie Vaughn, Betty Simon; half sisters, Shirley Tavernier, Ramona Tavernier, Velma Tavernier and Cossette Tavernier. She is preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Anna Marie Murray, four sisters, Emily Tavernier, Frances Keyser, Pauline Davis, Alice Sayer, three brothers, George Leonard Tavernier, Jr., Paul Aloysius Tavernier, Sr., and Julius Tavernier. Irene is survived also by her faithful companions of the past three years, Viktorya (Darnell) Meyers and baby Meigha, Ed Phebus and Denise Glasenapp.The family wishes to thank the staff of Maple Crest Care Center for their care of Irene.

Funeral Information

A visitation will be held 3:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M., Thursday, January 19, 2012 with a Funeral service to follow at 5:00 P.M. at Buck-Wheeler-Hyland Funeral Home. 218 W. Hurlbut Av. A Graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, January 20, 2012 at Arborcrest Memorial Park, Effingham, IL.
