Mr. Gordon C. Spooner

Gordon C. Spooner, 84, of Belvidere, died Tuesday, February 2, 2010 in O.S.F. St. Anthony Medical Center. He was born December 29, 1925 in Belvidere, Illinois, the son of Earl and Katie (Crane) Spooner. He graduated from the National Cleaners and Dryers, Silver Springs, Maryland in December 1948. He married Lucy DeSanto on October 4, 1950, she died August 15, 1992. He then married Rosemary Rice in Belvidere on March 10, 2001. Gordon served two tours of duty with the U.S. Navy in March 1944 and March 1951. He was owner of Modern Cleaners opening it in October 1949. Gordon was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church, Belvidere. He served three terms as Boone County Treasurer, retiring in 1998. A 56 year member of Rotary International, where he served as past president. A 62 year member of the Masonic Lodge #60 and life member of A.A.S.R. Valley of Freeport. Gordon is survived by his wife, Rosemary, Belvidere; three sons, John, Rockdale, IL; Robert (Angie), Alphretta, GA; and Theodore of Belvidere; three grandsons; four step children, Rodney (Barbara) Rice, Boonville, NY; Richard (Becky) Rice, Forreston, IL; Rebecca (Curtis) Newport, Belvidere and Randall (Anne) Rice, Byron; eight step-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren. In addition to his first wife, Gordon is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Edward and Alden (Darleen) Spooner.

Funeral Information

A Celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Cremation will take place. Arrangements by Buck-Wheeler-Hyland Funeral Home 218 W. Hurlbut Av.

A memorial will be established for First United Methodist Church of Belvidere or Belvidere Rotary Foundation.
