Bagpipes

The last few cars pull in. The faint sounds of civilization are ringing in the clear, crisp air of the late fall season. The crunch of fallen leaves is heard with every step. The tears and quiet murmurs cannot be ignored. All of these noises seem to flood the ears of the family and friends. There is a deep longing for peace and sanctuary. Then, as if on cue, a lengthy, comforting tome is heard. It is deep and low as it slowly masks the sounds of the city and the audible sadness. There is a man playing the bagpipes as if it were played for each broken heart. There is a remembrance of life and a longing to celebrate that life. With each delicate note played, the sadness of loss seems carried away, if only for the moment. The song slowly fades to a soft, background hymn and the comforting voice of the celebrant brings a sense of reverence and closure. The sun peaks through the scattered clouds and for a fraction all feel the warmth of the loved one lost. It is no longer a funeral, but an expression of a beautiful celebration of life.

At Buck-Wheeler-Hyland, the music of the bagpipes is an asset that sets them apart from all other funeral homes in Boone County, Illinois. There is a beautiful history of sanctuary and tradition weaved into the music of the bagpipes. That is why Buck-Wheeler-Hyland believes it truly is a remarkable addition to any funeral ceremony.

Over the past 1,000 years, the bagpipes' music has carried itself from the Middle East to Great Britain, Scotland and Ireland. The bagpipes found their home in these countries and began to integrate into the culture of these peoples. Every village had a bagpiper. This musical instrument was the center of all local events, celebrations and memorials. The music had and still does have the capability to capture the mood of these peoples. They would say that its notes would carry the spirit of a loved one far into the heavens. The bagpipes then followed the Scottish and Irish immigrants to the western world where it is now a symbol of healing and beauty in times of trial.
